Belief 1: I can’t set boundaries at work or say no to extra projects because then my manager will think I’m not dedicated to this position and pass me by when it comes time for a promotion.
You are sitting at your desk when an email pops up asking you to take on a new project. You just don’t have time for it but then you get concerned, “What if I say no?” or “If I don’t take on extra responsibilities, my manager will think I’m not dedicated enough to this position.” Or Maybe “I will be letting my team down if I don’t do this. They are counting on me.”
So even though you don’t want to and are already feeling stressed and overwhelmed you write back, “Of course! No problem!”
And suddenly your to-do list is even longer.
The truth is, it is possible to set healthy boundaries in the workplace that allows you to stop taking work home at night or on the weekends and spend more time on the projects that are important to you. Without letting anyone down and while still showing how dedicated you are to the position and organization.
Belief 2: There is nothing I can do to stop procrastinating. It isn’t even worth trying.
A month ago your boss asked you to make the pitch at an important meeting with a prospective client. They are relying on you to seal the deal and get them to sign onto a big contract. Your performance could make or break it for you when it comes time for a promotion.
You know how much this matters, but you immediately are hit with doubt, “Can I really do it? Will it (I) be good enough?
You think back to when you made big presentations that didn’t deliver what everyone had hoped. You get caught up in thinking about all the things that could go wrong and push your notes, reports, and references to the corner of your desk promising yourself that you’ll come back to it tomorrow.
But then tomorrow comes and you decide to save the work for another day. And a few days later it is still not started.
A week later, all the materials you’d collected and the notes your boss gave you are buried under a pile of papers.
The night before the meeting rolls around and there you are. Stuck staying late at work (maybe even having to pull an all-nighter). Frantically, you throw things together.
The next day, you manage to deliver the pitch, but it isn’t your best work and you know you could have done way better . . . if you had only given yourself more time.
What if we told you there was a way to break free from this cycle of procrastination?
It might feel impossible now, but there are a few easy shifts that can help you to beat procrastination once and for all so that you can finish projects early and have plenty of time to create work you are proud of
Belief 3: I can’t change my team’s attitude. If they are negative or want to gossip, there is nothing that I can do to stop them.
It is a Monday after a great weekend and you pull up to your office trying to get the motivation to just walk inside and get to work. You used to enjoy work and it’s not that you don’t want to be there today, it’s that you just don’t have the energy to deal with your coworkers’ seemingly constant negativity.
You take a deep breath and head inside only to immediately be stopped by a colleague who wants to gossip about someone else in the office. You try to brush it off but find yourself trapped in a conversation that you don’t want to have. When you finally step away from the conversation, you are greeted by another colleague itching to complain about everything that is going wrong in their life and how nothing ever seems to work out in their favor.
By the time you make it to your desk, you feel exhausted by everyone’s’ negativity and you can’t wait until 5 o’clock comes so you can get out of there. Of course between now and 5 pm, there will only be more complaints, sniping, and under-the-breath comments. You will watch as people get caught up in toxic office politics. Motivation sags and productivity goes out the door.
You know that something has to give, but you don’t know what will work. Plus, you worry that if you speak up, people will turn against you, and before long, you will be the target of a new string of gossip. Maybe you should just suck it up . . .
On the other hand, no one, not even you, should have to suffer through a toxic work climate. And remember: If you’re feeling bothered, other members of your team may be feeling the same way.
Because there is another way.
With Be Your Own Best Coach, you’ll learn science-based ways to overcome a toxic workplace. You’ll develop powerful skills to model and teach to your team. Belief 4: Being overwhelmed at work is inevitable
We all know the feeling of a to-do list that never seems to get shorter. It just grows longer and longer. Someone asks you to pick up another project, an urgent email comes through, you spend all day in meetings and don’t have time to do anything else. No matter what the cause is, you end up with more and more tasks to do, but less and less time in which to do them. When the day is over, your gas tank is empty and you feel overwhelmed.
You may have come to terms with this. You see it as something that goes hand-in-hand with working. You work, you get paid, you feel stressed out.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Be Your Own Best Coach helps you develop the strategies you need to combat feeling overwhelmed. Instead, you will feel strong, l in control and confident
