BYOBC’s onboarding week starts by dispelling the myths and mistakes that trip people up when they think about personal performance, self-improvement, and career advancement.
Then, it sets the stage for your work through the course by setting a baseline for where you’re at now so you can gauge your progress and measure success as you progress through the course.

During this week, you’ll:
- Assess how you’re doing personally, socially, and on the job
- Define the importance of self-leadership and self-coaching
- Examine 16 myths and mistakes people make when it comes to behavior change
- Recognize the barriers that may have been holding you back from reaching your career goals
Week 1: YOU

During this week, you’ll grow your awareness about how what’s going on in your head drives the actions you take. You’ll recognize the inner dialogue that can trip you up. And you’ll learn a variety of strategies to harness the power of that inner voice to amplify your strengths and skills and put them into action.
You’ll also look at one model of how to work with the inner critic that it’s used in different settings around the world for all kinds of people and all ages..
During this week, you’ll:
- Create a personal history of success
- Practice using one simple five-word question to instantly set clear priorities
- Use a four-part method to create a personal empowerment plan that boosts your capacity to learn from mistakes and set-backs
- Use a 6-part science-based model to guide your progress in boosting your self-leadership skills in the area of personal mindset and self-talk
Week 3: PEOPLE
People BYOBC’s Week 3 expands the focus beyond just you and your inner experience to the people around you. This week takes you on a deep dive into the power of peers: the good, the bad, and the ugly....Read more
Often, this is where the rubber meets the road. It reveals the benefits of the inner work you did in the previous two weeks. This will challenge and stretch you. It also will give you practical, concrete skills. Instead of agonizing about how to survive the interpersonal issues and conflicts that so often frustrate people on the job, you’ll gain real-life skills that make these stormy seas a lot calmer.
During this week, you’ll:
- Boost your ability to discern friends from foes
- Analyze strategies the most productive people use to set expectations and maintain healthy boundaries
- Practice using scripts proven to help you manage your relationships at work that are based on mutual respect, trust, and cooperation
- Incorporate habits for effective emotional regulation into your daily routines so you stay grounded and in control
- Use a 6-part science-based model to guide your progress in boosting your self-leadership skills in the area of social connections
Week 4: ENVIRONMENT

This week also opens a new door for you: It’s the door to creativity and imagination. No matter what job sector you’re in, job performance, productivity, and personal satisfaction all increase when you harness the power of creativity and imagination.
During this week, you’ll:
- Identify and evaluate the unique environmental factors available to you
- Construct a reliable, imagined environmental resource that you can use to both enhance you when you’re at your best or help you manage when you’re facing difficult challenges
- Create environmental force functions that help you nail desired habits and avoid bad habits
- Apply reward and punishment in a way that maximizes motivation and reduces procrastination
- Use a 6-part science-based model to guide your progress in boosting your self-leadership skills in the area of managing the external, environmental factors around you
Week 5: THINGS
Week 5 is the final week of your BYOBC journey. It will boost your self-leadership by adding key tools to your toolkit. These tools will help you assess how you’re doing, identify exactly where you’re at in your journey, choose appropriate tasks and goals matched to where you’re at in the journey, and give you science-based methods to avoid setbacks and recover from the setbacks, bumps in the road, or relapses that are part of the normal change process....Read more
This week will deepen your understanding of the change process and the continuum along which change happens. It will help you match where you’re at on the continuum with the exact strategy you need to move forward in the self-change process.
Whether it’s merely entertaining the idea of change, weighing the costs and benefits, preparing and planning to do something, taking concrete steps to get going, or keep up the good stuff you’ve started, this week is often a huge “aha” for a lot of people.
The tools you’ll use in this final week bring all the ideas from the previous weeks together into a unified whole. You’ll recognize how what you’ve been working on in one area of your life also applies to other areas, too. Common problems such as procrastination, feeling stressed and overwhelmed, or struggling with difficult people at work can shrink or totally resolve when approached using the tools in this week’s session.
During this week, you’ll:
- Practice using a quantitative assessment method that amplifies your sense of strength and personal competence
- Plot your journey from the past to illuminate the way forward so you can conquer the unique challenges and tasks required to go from one stage in the journey to the next
- Examine setbacks, failures, and relapse through a solution-focused lens so you turn failures into insight that will get you closer to your goals the next time
- Examine your past history in a way that amplifies your innate strengths, skills, and resources
- Use a 6-part science-based model to guide your progress in boosting your self-leadership skills using quantitative and qualitative methods to chart and your course
